Hotel Review: Pittsburgh Marriott City Center – Skyline Views, Slow Wi-Fi & Tired Vibes

Our Summer 2025 road trip started off with a quick overnight at the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center. Located right across from PPG Paints Arena, this full-service Marriott has a prime downtown location. But between the slow Wi-Fi, dated rooms, and a gym that really missed the mark, this stop didn’t exactly kick off our adventure on the right note. Here’s my full teen take.

First Impressions & Check-In

We pulled up just after 2:30 p.m. and dropped our truck at valet. Shoutout to my dad for remembering mobile check-in—our keys were ready and waiting, which made things super fast. Oanh at the front desk was really friendly and welcoming.

The lobby felt open and spacious with plenty of seating. Steelhead Brasserie & Wine Bar sits on the right, and the check-in desk is on the left. Plus, there were plenty of luggage carts ready to go, which made unloading way easier.

Room Tour

We booked a Deluxe Double Room on the 17th floor. It had a solid city skyline view and plenty of space for the four of us. But here’s where things dropped off:

  • Old-school Marriott design throughout.
  • Mattresses were uncomfortable with clear indents—you could tell they’d been through a lot of use.
  • The bathroom was small with a tub.
  • Some wallpaper was peeling.
  • The only updated feature? The TV.

For a full-scale Marriott in a big U.S. city, these rooms are way overdue for a refresh.

Wi-Fi & Gaming Setup

Connecting my laptop, phone, iPad, and Nintendo Switch was easy, but the Wi-Fi was slow. It landed near the bottom of my Hotel Wi-Fi Speed Leaderboard, which was disappointing for a downtown property. 👉 Curious where it ranked? Check out my Hotel Wi-Fi Speed Leaderboard.

The TV was newer and should’ve made console setup easy—but I got fooled by the Marriott Easy Connect station (didn’t work at all). Once I gave up and just plugged in normally, my Switch connected quickly. Outlets were limited, so I had to use my trusty power bar to keep everything charged.

Pool Vibes + Gym

No pool here, which already felt like a miss.

The gym was mid-sized with five cardio machines—two of them were out of service. It had free weights, benches, and a cable machine, but the vibe was rough:

  • The room was hot and musty.
  • An AC unit was broken, dripping into a bucket.
  • The whole space smelled like bad water (This smell could also have been coming from the guest laundry as it was located inside the gym).

Honestly, I’ve stayed at lower-tier Marriott brands with way better gyms.

Dining + Lounge

We had access to the M Club Lounge thanks to my dad’s Titanium Elite status. The evening spread had BBQ boneless wings, Caesar salad, fruit, chips, and lemon cake. Not bad at all.

Breakfast the next morning was solid:

  • At Steelhead, I had the All-American Breakfast, my dad got the Steel City Omelet (highly recommended), and my mom went with French Toast with caramelized bananas. All delicious.
  • The lounge breakfast had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, fruit, bread, and juices—also a decent spread.

Food-wise, the hotel delivered.

Food & Fun Nearby

If you want to venture out:

For dessert, we hit The Milkshake Factory. My dad had Bananas Foster, my sister got S’mores Campfire, and yes—I stole sips of both. Worth it.

Things to Do in Pittsburgh

Even if the hotel fell flat, the location puts you right next to some of Pittsburgh’s best.

Sports fans: Pirates at PNC Park (20-min walk) or Steelers at Acrisure Stadium (40-min walk).

Final Verdict

The Pittsburgh Marriott City Center has the location, friendly staff, and decent food options, but it’s just not enough to overcome the negatives. The rooms feel tired, the mattresses were uncomfortable, and the Wi-Fi was too slow for a full-service downtown Marriott. Add in no pool and a weak gym, and this hotel just doesn’t deliver the teen-friendly experience I look for.

Unless you absolutely need to be right next to PPG Paints Arena, I’d look elsewhere. On a past Pittsburgh trip, I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh Downtown, and that hotel felt much more updated and comfortable—not to mention closer to attractions like PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, the Heinz History Center, and the Strip District.

So what’s the verdict? The Pittsburgh Marriott City Center is not This Teen Travelz Approved.
