Hotel Review: The Vanguard Ann Arbor, Autograph Collection – Design Goals, Walkability & “Go Blue!” Vibes
A brand-new Autograph Collection hotel in the heart of Ann Arbor? Yes, please. The Vanguard Ann Arbor, Autograph Collection opened just weeks before my stay, and it already feels like one of the city’s standouts. From its bold design and thoughtful details to its location steps from the University of Michigan and downtown shops, this hotel made a serious first impression.
We stayed here for two nights during our Michigan summer road trip, and it quickly became clear why this property was ten years in the making. With welcoming staff, clever touches everywhere you look, and a style that ties back to Ann Arbor’s history, The Vanguard set the bar high for new hotels.
Let’s get into it!

Check-In & First Impressions
We pulled up around 3:00 p.m., and right away you should know: valet-only parking here.
- Valet crew = elite hospitality. Someone was always at the door greeting us or opening it as we came and went—one of the nicest valet teams I’ve met.
- Entrance & scent: The entry is stylish, and the hotel’s signature scent (created by a local Michigan company) hits you in the best way. We loved it so much we asked about it.
- Lobby layout: You can literally see from one end to the other—check-in → seating → bar → restaurant → open kitchen. Clean lines and super modern.
- Smart keycard holder: Maybe the coolest I’ve seen—folds out into an Ann Arbor map, lists amenities, and has QR codes for menus and services.
- Property tour: Shoutout to Emily, Director of Sales & Marketing, for the tour and history. Open just ~1 month when we visited but a decade in the making.
- Name inspo: A nod to James Burrill Angell, longest-serving U-M president, known for the “uncommon education for the common man” idea—room names tie back to that Vanguard theme.
Our Room: Elevated Double Queen (Upgraded from Uncommon Double Queen)
I was impressed before we even opened the door.
- Hallway detail: Oversized magnifying glasses over room numbers—quirky and memorable.
- Floors: No carpet. Tile in the entry/bathroom and patterned hardwood in the bedroom area (so clean and modern).
- Entry bench + mirror: Perfect “check your fit” setup before heading out.
- Layout & furniture:
- Two super-comfortable queen beds
- Good-sized desk
- Swing-out TV mount (gaming made easy from either bed)
- Chair + ottoman
- Creative bedside lights that double as art
- Coffee & storage:
- Nespresso Vertuo (mom = happy)
- Clever cabinet for coffee + mini-fridge
- Large wardrobe with safe, tons of storage; one door is a full-length mirror, the other has a passport stamp pattern (nice touch)
- Bathroom: A stunner—rainfall shower, plush robe, and Le Labo amenities (another mom fave).
- Design verdict: One of the most detailed room designs I’ve stayed in—little touches everywhere.
Wi-Fi, Tech & Gaming Setup
- Connection: Super easy on laptop, phone, iPad, and Switch.
- Elite perk: First hotel that auto-recognized my dad’s Bonvoy status and bumped the internet tier without extra login screens. Please roll this out everywhere, Marriott 🙏.
- Speed: Solid for streaming + gaming. Want the exact ranking? Check my Hotel Wi-Fi Speed Leaderboard.
- Gaming: The swing-out TV mount made it plug-and-play.
- Tip: Not enough outlets near the TV/desk—bring a power bar. (My trusty one = lifesaver.)
Pool Vibes & Gym
- Pool: None here.
- Gym: Located on 2R. Pro tip: when no one’s inside, it’s pitch-black; step in and the lights auto-kick on—feels futuristic.
- Plenty of cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and accessories
- Overall: solid hotel gym and easy to access
Dining: La Serre (On-Site) + Can’t-Miss Ann Arbor Bites
On-site – La Serre (breakfast, lunch, dinner):
- Parents ate breakfast both mornings and called it one of the best they’ve had during a hotel stay.
- Recs from staff:
- Broken Yolk Sandwich → my dad’s “best breakfast sandwich ever”
- Crème Fraîche Pancake
- Vegan French Crepes (rare to find and exceptional, per my mom)
Nearby food we tried:
- Zingerman’s Deli (≈13-minute walk): epic sandwiches, quirky vibe, and hanging pickles leading you to the order area. We tried:
- Rick’s 50/50
- Tarb’s Tenacious Tenure
- Dave’s Open Road
- Lisa C’s Boisterous Brisket
Each comes with a new (crunchier) or old-style pickle. After 5 p.m., they discount select baked goods—we grabbed a French stick, croissants, muffins, and biscuits.
- HopCat (≈12-minute walk): Thursday Burger & Beer night (soda for teens). $9 for burger, fries, drink—plus great apps.
More staff recs (walkable):
- Sava’s – local fave, happy hour wins
- Gandy Dancer – housed in an old train station where trains roll by; more upscale vibe
Fun fact: “Gandy dancer” was a nickname for early railroad track crews.
Things to Do in Ann Arbor (Most ≤ 20-minute walk)
- University of Michigan Museum of Natural History – my favorite stop
- Kelsey Museum of Archaeology – we caught the Roman Gladiators exhibit
- U-M Campus & Visitor Center – Go Blue!
- Nickels Arcade – covered 1918 shopping corridor with mosaic tile and legacy shops
- Graffiti Alley – ever-changing outdoor art; my dad liked this more than the art museum 😂
- Ann Arbor Farmers Market & Kerrytown Market & Shops
- Pinball Pete’s – classic arcade energy
- Michigan Theater & State Theater – retro cinema vibe
- Sports fans, plan this:
- RallyHouse (downtown): massive, gear heaven
- Michigan Stadium (The Big House): ~9-minute drive / ~36-minute walk
- Michigan Stadium Tours sell out—book in advance
- Crisler Center (basketball) – right by the stadium
- Yost Ice Arena (hockey) – ~8-minute drive / ~25-minute walk
- Many other U-M facilities cluster in the same area (~15-minute drive max)
Teen Travel Tips
- Pack the power bar (limited outlets by TV/desk).
- La Serre breakfast is a must—go for the Broken Yolk or the vegan crepes.
- Book Big House tours early if that’s on your list.
- Walk or borrow bikes from the hotel to explore easily.
- Use the swing-out TV mount for Switch gaming from either bed.
Final Verdict: A True “Vanguard” (Teen Travelz Approved)
Besides not having a pool, this hotel checks every box: thoughtful design, central location, easy Wi-Fi + gaming setup, and standout staff. That balance is a big part of my teen hotel perspective. And the name fits—“Vanguard” means leading the way. From the custom scent to the keycard-map to the room details and hospitality, this property feels like it’s leading Ann Arbor’s hotel scene with fresh ideas and real personality. It’s not just a place to sleep—it’s a statement.
Would I stay again? 100%. This is a repeat-worthy base for campus trips, foodie weekends, or just exploring Ann Arbor.
Officially: This Teen Travelz Approved.
A Heartfelt Thank-You
Emily, thank you for taking the time to share the hotel’s story, give us a tour, and help with a discounted rate. As a 13-year-old building this channel one honest review at a time, support like yours seriously matters. Shoutout to Kim and Gabby at the front desk for the warm check-ins and constant recs—you made us feel at home.
To the whole Vanguard team: you helped my family make memories we’ll keep. That’s why I do this—so other families can find places that actually work for them.
Thanks for reading — see you in the next review!
