This Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review looks at one of Augusta’s biggest convention hotels — but with a huge suite, two pools, and direct access to the Riverwalk, could it also be a great hotel for families and teens?
That was the big question going into this stay.
When my family was planning our Epic Summer 2025 Road Trip, Augusta was one of the places I suggested we visit. During the school year, two of my classmates and I completed a project on the “Godfather of Soul,” James Brown. While researching his life, I learned a lot about his connection to Augusta and became interested in seeing the city for myself.
So when my parents mentioned that Augusta could become one of our road trip stops, one of the first things I asked was whether we could visit the James Brown statue.
This was our family’s first time visiting Augusta and our first stay at the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center. It is a massive downtown Augusta hotel made up of two towers, with the convention center connecting them in the middle. It also sits beside the Savannah River and connects directly to the Augusta Riverwalk.
This stay was also another stop on my Epic Summer 2025 Road Trip, where my family and I travelled for 19 days and stayed at 14 different hotels.
Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center Review: Arrival & First Impressions
In this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review, the arrival experience was one of the first signs that this stay would feel different. From the moment we pulled up to the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center, we were greeted by several staff members who were friendly and welcoming.
It had been a while since I had stayed at a Marriott with bell staff, and that immediately made the arrival feel a little more special.
Once we entered the main lobby, two things stood out right away.
The first was the large grand staircase in the centre of the space. The second was the hotel’s signature scent, which was different from any other full-service Marriott I had stayed at before. It smelled really good and helped give the lobby its own personality.
The lobby was also unlike most hotel lobbies I had seen. At the foot of the staircase was a comfortable seating area, with Augustino’s restaurant to the right and the reception desk to the left. Beside the front desk were the hotel market and the elevators.
Behind and around the staircase were even more seating areas, along with K.C.’s Korner, the hotel’s grab-and-go location serving Starbucks coffee, drinks, pastries, and snacks.
A Massive Two-Tower Hotel
The Augusta Marriott is much larger than it first appears because it is made up of two towers.
The Main Tower contains the main entrance, reception desk, restaurants, and much of the hotel’s public space. The Suites Tower is located on the opposite side of the convention center.
The two buildings originally operated as separate hotels before Marriott brought them together and built the convention center between them. Today, the entire complex operates as one large hotel connected directly to the Augusta Convention Center.
That setup makes this a very different hotel from a smaller roadside Marriott or a typical overnight stop.
Check-In Experience
Jennifer, the front desk manager, greeted us when we arrived, and Aaron helped us at check-in.
The process was quick and easy. Aaron explained where to park in the hotel’s indoor parking garage and gave us a map showing how to reach our room and the different amenities throughout the property.
That map was genuinely useful.
Our room was in the Suites Tower, which meant walking through part of the convention area from the Main Tower. Since the hotel has so many meeting rooms, hallways, and event spaces, I could easily see it getting very busy during conferences and major events in Augusta.
If you’re looking for a hotel connected to the Augusta Convention Center, this one is obviously built for that. It feels like an Augusta conference hotel, but it still ended up working really well for my family too.
Even though the property is older, my first impression was that it was clean, well maintained, and full of character. The grand staircase, large lobby, signature scent, and friendly welcome gave the hotel a memorable sense of arrival.
Room Tour: A Huge Suite in the Suites Tower
We originally booked a room with two double beds in the Main Tower, but the hotel upgraded us to a suite with two queen beds and a sofa bed on the fifth floor of the Suites Tower.
For the room section of this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review, the suite upgrade ended up being one of the biggest highlights.
As soon as we entered, we walked into a separate living room with a sofa bed, an armchair, and a large television. Having a full living area gave my family much more space than we were expecting and made the suite feel comfortable instead of crowded.
Living Room, Bathroom & Dry Bar
The living room worked really well for a family stay. It gave us a separate place to relax, watch TV, set up gaming, or hang out without everyone being stuck in the bedroom area.
In the middle of the suite was the bathroom, which had a stand-up shower. The shower had some of the strongest water pressure I have experienced at a hotel, which definitely stood out during the stay.
Across from the bathroom was a dry-bar area with a larger-than-average mini-fridge. That was useful for storing drinks and anything we brought back to the room.
Separate Bedroom Setup
Past the bathroom and dry bar was the bedroom, which could be separated from the living room by closing a door.
The bedroom had two queen beds, a small desk area, and a second large television. The separate bedroom and living room setup gave everyone more room to spread out and also made it easier for someone to watch television or relax without disturbing the rest of the family.
The suite was clean, spacious, and a great size for my family. The beds were comfortable, and the room gave us plenty of space for an overnight stay.
I also appreciated that the suite did not have carpeted floors. The vinyl flooring felt cleaner and was especially helpful for my dad and sister, who both deal with allergies.
For a family needing extra space or trying to avoid heavily carpeted hotel rooms, this layout worked very well.
The room may not have had the newest Marriott design, but it was well maintained and comfortable. For a one-night stay in downtown Augusta, this suite was a major win.
Wi-Fi & Gaming Setup
For this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review, I also tested the Wi-Fi and gaming setup from the suite.
The hotel Wi-Fi was easy to connect to across all of my devices, including my phone, laptop, iPad, and Nintendo Switch.
Using Ookla Speedtest from our suite, I recorded speeds of 45.6 Mbps download and 42.4 Mbps upload.
The speeds were decent and worked well for the normal things I needed during the stay, including browsing, streaming, and connecting my gaming devices.

Nintendo Switch Setup
Since our suite had two televisions, I had a choice of where to set up my Nintendo Switch.
The television in the bedroom would have been more difficult to use because the HDMI connection was harder to access, so I decided to connect it to the television in the living room instead.
Connecting my Nintendo Switch was quick and easy. I used my usual method of carefully removing the hotel’s HDMI cable from the television and replacing it with the cable from my Nintendo Switch dock.
The living room setup worked well because there was plenty of space around the television, and the separate room meant I could play without taking over the bedroom area.
For teens travelling with a console, the living-room television was definitely the better option in this suite.
Pool Vibes & Fitness Centre
For families, this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review really starts to stand out when you look at the pool setup. The Augusta Marriott does not have just one pool — it has two.
Guests can choose between an indoor pool in the Suites Tower and an outdoor pool near the riverfront side of the property.
Indoor Pool and Hot Tub
The indoor pool area included both a swimming pool and a hot tub.
One of the first things I noticed was how much seating was available around the pool. There were plenty of chairs and tables, which made the space feel practical and welcoming for families who might be spending more than a few minutes there.
The indoor setup also gives guests a pool option when the weather is not ideal. That is especially useful for families visiting Augusta during cooler weather or on a rainy day.
Outdoor Pool Area
The outdoor pool area had a completely different atmosphere.
It offered plenty of loungers with side tables, along with tables with chairs and umbrellas. I liked the surrounding atmosphere of this pool area, and it felt like a relaxing place to spend time outside.
Having both an indoor and outdoor pool gave the hotel more flexibility than many convention-focused hotels I have stayed at.
Families could use the indoor pool regardless of the weather, while the outdoor pool offered a more open and relaxing environment.
Fitness Centre
The fitness centre was also a good size and had plenty of room to move around.
It included four treadmills, two ellipticals, two exercise bikes, two weight benches, a full rack of dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, yoga equipment, a multi-gym, and a leg press.
The equipment selection gave guests several options for cardio, strength training, and stretching. It did not feel like a small hotel gym with only a couple of machines.
For a large conference hotel, the fitness centre felt properly equipped for guests who wanted to maintain their normal workout routine while travelling.
Food at Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center
Food is another area where this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review had more to cover than I expected.
The Augusta Marriott has several food and drink options inside the hotel.
That is important because this is a large downtown Augusta hotel connected to the convention center. If you are staying here for an event, conference, road trip stop, or family visit, having multiple food options on the property makes the hotel more convenient.
Augustino’s Italian Restaurant
Augustino’s is the hotel’s upscale Italian restaurant and has been open since 1994.
It is known for its steaks and pasta, which are two of my favourite types of food. I did not get the chance to eat there during this stay, but after walking through the restaurant and learning more about it, it is somewhere I would like to try on a future visit.
K.C.’s Korner
For something quicker, K.C.’s Korner offers Starbucks coffee, beverages, fresh pastries, snacks, and grab-and-go items.
It is located just behind the main staircase, making it convenient for guests looking for coffee or something small without sitting down for a full meal.
Concierge Lounge
Because my dad is a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member, my family also had access to the hotel’s Concierge Lounge.
We used the lounge for both the evening hors d’oeuvres and breakfast.
During the evening, the Concierge Lounge offered cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, spring rolls, a selection of cakes, and several grab-and-go snacks. There was enough variety to put together a light meal or enjoy something small before heading out for dinner.
For breakfast, the Concierge Lounge served scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and a selection of breads. It provided a convenient way for us to eat before heading out to explore Augusta.
Michael and Imani, the Concierge Lounge attendants, were both excellent. They were friendly, helpful, and made my family feel welcome. They also shared their knowledge of Augusta and gave us helpful local information, which added another personal connection to the stay.
Food Near Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center
Since the hotel is located downtown, there are also plenty of casual restaurants within walking distance, especially around Broad Street.
Some of the places that were recommended to us or had strong reviews included Nacho Mama’s, Knuckle Sandwiches, Groucho’s Deli, Tacocat, Whiskey Bar Kitchen, and Mellow Mushroom.
For dinner, we decided to visit Farmhaus, which is known for its burgers and homemade-style milkshakes.
My dad ordered the Farmstyle Burger with fries and creamy coleslaw. My mom ordered the Grilled Yard Bird with creamy coleslaw, and I chose the Original Grilled Cheese with fries because I wanted something a little lighter.
All three of our meals were delicious. The food was casual, filling, and a great choice for our first dinner in Augusta.
Based on our experience, Farmhaus is definitely somewhere I would recommend to families looking for an affordable and relaxed downtown meal.
Things to Do Near Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center
One of the biggest advantages of staying at the Augusta Marriott is its downtown location.
The hotel is close to Broad Street, directly connected to the Augusta Riverwalk, and within walking distance of several attractions, restaurants, museums, and public spaces.
If you’re looking for a hotel in downtown Augusta that is walkable to the Riverwalk and connected directly to the convention center, this one checks a lot of boxes.
Augusta & Co.
If you are visiting Augusta for the first time, one of the first places I would recommend stopping at is Augusta & Co., the city’s visitor and experience centre.
It is only about a five-minute walk from the hotel.
Augusta & Co. is more than a traditional tourist information centre. It functions as a community hub and includes a rotating art gallery, regional merchandise, and local products that make great souvenirs.
The centre is staffed by Augusta Experts who can help visitors discover restaurants, attractions, outdoor activities, and some of the city’s lesser-known places.
I picked up a few souvenirs during our visit, and the staff provided helpful information about the area. For guests who cannot make it to Augusta & Co., the hotel also had an interactive Visit Augusta kiosk on its second floor during our stay.
Broad Street
Augusta & Co. is located on Broad Street, which runs through the centre of downtown Augusta.
Broad Street is known for its width, historic buildings, public art, local restaurants, and independent businesses. It was a pleasant area to walk through and explore during our first visit.
Augusta Riverwalk and Savannah River
Another major advantage of the hotel is its direct connection to the Augusta Riverwalk.
The Riverwalk is a multi-level brick trail that stretches along the Savannah River from approximately 5th Street to 13th Street. It is one of the city’s most popular public spaces and offers places to walk, exercise, relax, and enjoy views of the river.
Because the hotel connects directly to the Riverwalk, we did not need to drive to reach it. We could leave the hotel and begin exploring the riverfront almost immediately.
That makes the Augusta Marriott a very convenient hotel near the Augusta Riverwalk and Savannah River.
On Saturdays, visitors may also find the Augusta Market at the Riverwalk. This free outdoor market features local farmers, artists, food vendors, live music, and handmade products along the riverfront.
Public Art, Museums and the Sculpture Trail
A large portion of the Augusta Sculpture Trail can also be found around the Riverwalk and downtown area.
During our visit, the trail featured 18 sculptures created by nationally recognized artists. The sculptures were scheduled to remain on display from January 2025 through December 2026.
Near 10th Street is the Morris Museum of Art, which is dedicated to art and artists from the American South. The museum contains thousands of works and gives visitors a closer look at the history and culture of the region.
The museum can also be accessed from the Riverwalk area.
The Riverfront Campus of Augusta University is located nearby as well. The campus includes the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences and the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center.
These modern buildings add a very different look to the riverfront compared with some of Augusta’s older landmarks.
At one end of the Riverwalk is the Augusta Museum of History.
The museum explores Augusta’s past through exhibits covering subjects such as transportation, local industries, the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company, and important people connected to the city.
It also contains the largest collection of James Brown memorabilia, which made it especially interesting to me after completing a school project about him.
Fifth Street Freedom Pedestrian Bridge
Another nearby attraction is the Fifth Street Freedom Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses the Savannah River between Augusta, Georgia, and North Augusta, South Carolina.
The renovated bridge includes colourful murals by local artists, seating areas, and river views.
Walking across the bridge gave me another first during this road trip. I walked across a river from one state into another, travelling on foot from Georgia into South Carolina.
James Brown Statue and Augusta Common
The attraction I was most excited to see was the James Brown statue on Broad Street.
During the school year, two of my classmates and I had completed a project about the “Godfather of Soul,” so visiting his statue was one of the first things I wanted to do in Augusta.
When we reached the area in front of the Augusta Common, we found the sign and location where the statue was normally displayed, but the statue itself was missing.
It had been temporarily removed to allow construction of the James Brown Linear Park.
We later learned that the statue was being stored at the Augusta Museum of History. Unfortunately, it was not on public display when we visited the museum.
I later discovered that I had missed the chance to see it by only about three weeks.
Even though I did not get to see the statue, exploring Augusta helped me better understand the city’s connection to James Brown. We still found several tributes and references to him throughout the downtown area.
For a one-night stay, we managed to see quite a lot without travelling far from the hotel. The Riverwalk, Broad Street, Augusta & Co., museums, public art, and pedestrian bridge all helped make the hotel’s location one of the strongest parts of our stay.

The Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center is best suited for families, conference guests, road-trippers, and visitors who want to stay in downtown Augusta close to the Riverwalk, Broad Street, restaurants, museums, and other local attractions.
It is also a strong option for guests attending an event at the Augusta Convention Center. Since the hotel is directly connected to the convention space and has a large amount of meeting and event space, I can see why it gets so much attention during conferences and major Augusta events, including Masters week.
Standout Strength
The hotel’s biggest strength is how much it offers in one location.
We had a spacious upgraded suite, two pools, a hot tub, a well-equipped fitness centre, a Concierge Lounge, onsite dining, and direct access to the Augusta Riverwalk. The downtown location also made it easy to explore a large part of Augusta without constantly getting back into the car.
Honest Drawback
The one drawback is that the property is massive and can take some time to understand. Because the Main Tower and Suites Tower are separated by the convention center, reaching your room or some of the amenities may involve a longer walk than expected.
The map Aaron gave us at check-in was genuinely helpful. Guests who prefer a smaller and simpler hotel layout may find the property a little overwhelming at first.
The hotel is also an older property, and some areas do not have the newest Marriott design. However, everything we experienced was clean and well maintained, and the hotel still had plenty of character.
What made the biggest and most lasting impression was the staff.
From the moment we arrived, everyone was friendly and welcoming. Aaron made check-in simple, Jennifer greeted us when we arrived, and Michael and Imani provided excellent hospitality in the Concierge Lounge.
Hotels are made up of rooms, restaurants, meeting spaces, and amenities, but what truly makes a hotel great is the people. It is the staff who take the time to connect with guests, share local knowledge, and make people feel at home.
That human element is something I always pay attention to during my stays, and it often becomes one of the most memorable parts of a hotel experience.
My biggest regret is that we only had one night here. I wish we had more time to enjoy the hotel and explore Augusta. Even with such a short visit, both the hotel and the city made a very good lasting impression on me.
Overall, this Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center review showed me that a large convention hotel can still work really well from a teen and family perspective.
