Hotel Review: Courtyard Detroit Warren – Dated Vibes, Slow Check-In & A Tough Verdict
Old sign out front, slow check-in, and a room swap before we could even unpack. Our one-night stay at the Courtyard Detroit Warren wrapped up my Michigan summer road trip, but it didn’t end on a high note. While the Wi-Fi was decent and the central courtyard looked nice, the overall experience felt tired and inconvenient compared to other Courtyards I’ve stayed in.
Let’s get into it!

Check-In & First Impressions
We arrived just after 3:00 p.m. from Ann Arbor and pulled into the temporary parking out front.
- First look: The property still has the old Courtyard logo, which matched the generally dated feel.
- Lobby layout: Classic Courtyard setup—check-in desk ↔ Bistro, bright from windows on both sides. The lowered seating area faces the interior courtyard.
- Check-in experience: Very slow. Only one tiny, airport-style luggage cart, and it was sticky (…gross).
- Filming policy: Front-desk staff were kind and curious about my channel, but after checking with management, they didn’t allow filming in most areas. So if visuals feel lighter than usual, that’s why.
Layout note (accessibility & convenience)
The hotel is a box around an open courtyard with one elevator located at a far corner. If your room isn’t near that elevator, expect long walks to reach the lobby or your car.
Our Room: 2 Queens (After a Room Change)
Our first assigned room wasn’t usable.
- Room 1: My parents walked in and immediately walked out—carpet debris/food = not properly cleaned. We didn’t even bring bags in.
- Room 2: Front desk apologized and moved us, but the new room was even farther from the lone elevator. At least it was clean.
Inside the (older-design) room:
- Beds & seating: Two queen beds; armchair + side table + corner lamp.
- Desk: Decent size for a short stay.
- Balcony: Overlooked the side lot. Some balconies had furniture, some didn’t; ours had none.
- Appliances: Two mini-fridges (yes, two) + microwave + coffee maker.
- TV: Small and old; it didn’t turn on at first. After a little fiddling (thanks, Dad!), it worked.
- Bathroom: Split layout—sink outside; tub + toilet behind a door.
- Outlets: Sparse. Bring your power strip.
Wi-Fi & Gaming Setup
- Connection: Easy sign-in across my laptop, phone, iPad, and Nintendo Switch.
- Speed: Better than expected—lands mid-pack on my Hotel Wi-Fi Speed Leaderboard (check ThisTeenTravelz.com for exact rank).
- Console hookup: Once the TV finally powered on, HDMI was straightforward.
- Charging: Outlet hunt = annoying. Pack the power bar.
Pool Vibes, Gym & The Courtyard
- Pool: Looked decent-sized and usually had people enjoying it—good sign. Windows look out onto the interior courtyard, which is nice, but there’s also a second-floor window overlooking the pool that could feel a little awkward for swimmers.
- Gym: Very small—about 4 cardio machines + basic free weights.
- Courtyard (the best feature): Plenty of outdoor seating (tables, chairs, lounge areas). It’s the most inviting space on property—great for fresh air, hanging out with takeout, or scrolling.
Food Options (On-Site & Nearby)
On-site:
- The Bistro (Courtyard standard): paid breakfast, small plates, drinks. Breakfast is not included.
Nearby (walk/short drive):
- Buddy’s Pizza – 2-minute drive / 10-minute walk. Detroit-style pizza = 🔥 and my family’s favorite Caesar salad.
- Olive Garden – ~7-minute walk.
- Hall Road (Sterling Heights, ~15 min drive): a wall-to-wall strip of chains, including:
- Portillo’s – Chicago classics; get the Chocolate Cake Shake (real cake blended in).
- Ford’s Garage – Great burgers, fun car-themed dining room.
- Shake Shack, Outback, and tons more.
If your family has picky eaters, Hall Road almost guarantees a match.
Things to Do (Quick Hits)
- C.J. Barrymore’s – Indoor/outdoor amusement park with go-karts, loop coaster, bowling, and more.
- Dave & Buster’s – ~15 minutes away for evening arcade time.
- Shopping – We did a classic stock-up run: Target, Walmart, Meijer, Lowe’s, Costco.
- Movies – Several theaters within 10–15 minutes.
Teen Travel Tips
- Request a room near the elevator (long walks otherwise).
- Inspect your room on arrival and speak up immediately if cleaning missed the mark.
- Bring a power strip (outlets are limited).
- Plan breakfast off-site if you want value (Bistro is paid).
- Courtyard time = best time on this property—use it.
Final Verdict: Not This Teen Travelz Approved
I don’t love giving negative reviews—but I’m always honest. Even with friendly staff, a lively pool, and okay Wi-Fi, this stay missed the mark:
- Slow check-in and a sticky, tiny luggage cart
- First room not cleaned properly
- One elevator tucked in a far corner = long treks
- Dated room design, small/older TV, inconsistent balcony furniture
- Sparse outlets that make modern travel harder than it should be
Bottom line: this property feels due for a renovation and tighter quality control. With so many Courtyards (and other Marriott brands) delivering stronger experiences, I wouldn’t choose this one again.
Verdict: Not This Teen Travelz Approved.
