First impressions, I felt pretty nostalgic pulling up to this hotel.
My family has stayed here many times over the years, especially when we wanted to stay overnight on a Friday and visit the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market the next morning. So arriving here again felt familiar in a good way.
The hotel fits really well into the surrounding area. It does not feel like a random highway hotel. It has more of that cozy St. Jacobs and Waterloo market-area vibe, which works really well for the location.
Lobby and Check-In
Walking into the lobby, I remembered why I always liked this hotel. It can get busy at times, especially on a market weekend, but it still feels pretty chill.
Right when you walk in, The Bistro is on the right. Straight ahead, there’s a cozy L-shaped couch in front of a fireplace, which gives the lobby a warmer feel. To the left, you have the reception desk, the hotel market, another large seating area, and the business centre.
One detail I really liked was the area-inspired artwork in the business centre area. It ties the hotel into the local St. Jacobs area and makes the space feel less generic.
Check-in was quick and easy. The staff were friendly and efficient, which was helpful because it got busy right after we checked in.
The only small issue was that our room needed to be feather-free. The hotel staff quickly took care of it, and we only had to wait about 10 minutes before getting into the room. Since this has been missed at other hotels before, I appreciated how fast they handled it here.

For this stay, we booked a 2 Queen Bed Room and were assigned a room on the main floor.
That was actually kind of neat because I’ve stayed at this hotel many times when I was younger, but I don’t remember ever staying on the main floor before.
Room Layout and Features
The room was clean, bright, and comfortable. It had two queen beds, an armchair, a decent-sized desk, a large TV, a mini fridge, a microwave, and a coffee maker.
The hotel was renovated a few years ago, but it still has some of the older Courtyard layout and furniture. It looked like the carpeting, TV, and some room features had been updated, but it did not fully switch to the newest Courtyard Marriott design.
Honestly, I actually liked that.
The room mixed newer updates with the older Courtyard layout in a way that worked. It still had some of the older furniture and design, but it did not feel run-down. I especially liked the blue accent wall because it gave the room a little more personality.
Main Floor Room Comfort
The beds were comfortable, and even though we were on the main floor, the room was quiet. That was a nice surprise because sometimes main-floor rooms can feel a bit louder, especially near lobbies, hallways, or exits.
The bathroom was clean and in good shape. It was a good size and had a tub, which can be useful for families.
This was not the most spacious hotel room ever, but it was totally fine for the four of us for one night. And for this type of stay, we were not really hanging out in the room all day anyway. Most of the trip was built around the market, the train, and the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival.
So from a room perspective, this was comfortable, clean, and practical. It was not ultra-modern, but it worked well for a quick St. Jacobs weekend getaway.
Wi-Fi & Gaming Setup
From a teen perspective, the big question is always Wi-Fi and gaming.
Wi-Fi was easy to connect to across my laptop, phone, iPad, and Nintendo Switch.
Using Ookla Speedtest, I got 24.6 Mbps download and 87.4 Mbps upload.
So the upload speed was way faster than the download speed, which is not usually what I expect. As of this review, Courtyard by Marriott Waterloo St. Jacobs ranks number 40 on my Hotel Wi-Fi Speed Leaderboard.
This was not one of the fastest hotel Wi-Fi results I’ve tested, but for a regular overnight stay, it was usable. It was fine for basic streaming, scrolling, and staying connected.
For gaming, connecting my Nintendo Switch to the TV was pretty easy.
The TV placement was good, and the TV swung out, which made it easy to reach the Marriott Entertainment box and plug in my HDMI cable.
The one thing to know is that the TV input did not switch automatically. I did need the remote to go through the menu and change the input, but once I figured that out, the setup worked.
Because this is an older Courtyard layout, there were not a ton of outlets around the desk area. I always bring a power strip when I travel, and this is exactly the kind of room where that helps, especially if you have multiple phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, and gaming devices that need to charge.
Overall, the Wi-Fi was not amazing, but the gaming setup was better than expected because the HDMI access was easy.
Pool Vibes & Fitness Centre
No pool vibes here.
This hotel does not have a pool, so if you’re looking for a hotel where the pool is a major part of the stay, this probably is not the right pick.
But for this kind of trip, I don’t think the missing pool hurts the hotel too much.
This is more of a location-first stay. You’re probably staying here because you want to visit the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, St. Jacobs Village, the outlet area, the Waterloo Central Railway, or a local event like the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival.
The fitness centre was open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
For the size of the hotel, I thought the gym was decent. It had an exercise bike, two ellipticals, three treadmills, a weight bench, a weight rack, towels, and a water bottle refill station.
The gym was clean and not busy when I visited. I usually try to film hotel gyms late at night so I don’t have to worry about other people being in the shots, and that worked well here.
It also did not feel cramped. There was enough room to move around, and for a hotel this size, the gym did what it needed to do.
So the hotel does not win on pool vibes, but the fitness centre was clean, useful, and better than having nothing.

The Bistro and Hotel Market
The hotel has The Bistro, which is the Courtyard brand’s in-house restaurant. We did not buy anything from The Bistro on this trip, but we have used it in the past, and it would have been there if we needed it.
There is also a hotel market near the front desk, but we did not use it during this stay. My mom is really good at packing snacks for our family when we travel, so we usually already have something with us.
Near the hotel, there are a few walkable food options, including Stockyards Brewing, Jack’s Family Restaurant, and Arby’s. We did not eat at those places on this trip, but they are nearby if you want something close.
St. Jacobs Market Food
But honestly, if you’re staying here on a market day, the real food story is probably not the hotel. It’s the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market.
My family usually likes getting apple fritters from The Fritter Co. If you want those, I would definitely recommend going early because the lines can get long later in the day. We were at the market early, so there were no lines.
Since this hotel does not include free breakfast, and since we usually stay here when the market is open, we often walk through the market and head over to the Sausage and Schnitzel House for a peameal and egg sandwich.
That is one of those little traditions that makes this hotel work for us. You don’t really need the hotel to have a big breakfast setup if part of the plan is walking over to the market in the morning.
Lancaster Smokehouse
My family’s favourite place to eat in the area is The Lancaster Smokehouse. If you like BBQ, this place is a must-try, and it is only about a 10-minute drive from the hotel.
Just note that they are closed Sundays, and they can be really popular, so calling ahead or making a reservation is probably a good idea.
For me, the food section of this review is less about The Bistro and more about how many good food options are around the hotel when you use it as a base for St. Jacobs.
Things to Do Near Courtyard Waterloo St. Jacobs
This is where the Courtyard Waterloo St. Jacobs really makes sense.
One of the biggest reasons to book this hotel is that it works really well as a hotel near St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market.
St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market District
On a market day, you can explore the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market District, check out different vendors, grab food, shop, and then cross the road to Market Road Antiques.
The hotel is also close to the St. Jacobs Outlet Mall area, and the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse is basically next door. So if live theatre is your thing, this hotel is in a really convenient spot.
Waterloo Central Railway
Another cool part of the location is that it works as a hotel near the Waterloo Central Railway, especially if you’re planning to ride the train from the St. Jacobs Market station.
That became one of the best parts of this stay.
Elmira Maple Syrup Festival
We were staying at the hotel during the annual Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. My family used to go to this festival every year, but we had not been back in about five or six years.
Taking the Train to Elmira
My dad found out that the Waterloo Central Railway was picking up passengers near the St. Jacobs Market and taking visitors to Elmira. He bought tickets the week before, and it ended up being totally worth it.
The train station was very easy to find from the hotel. You basically walk to the end of the street where the market begins, turn right, and the station is there. It was about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
We took the 8 a.m. train. The train was busy, but I don’t think it was completely sold out. Boarding was easy, and the ride was roughly 40 minutes.
Taking the train was way better than driving. My parents were happy they did not have to deal with traffic going into and out of Elmira or worry about finding a parking spot.
Once we arrived in Elmira, wagons and shuttles were taking visitors from the train area to the actual festival street. The transfer was smooth, and they had plenty of wagons running.
At the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival
The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival itself was very busy and very crowded, but it was still fun to be back after so many years.
At the festival, we got perogies, tried samples from local vendors, and bought maple syrup, maple butter, maple candies, and flavoured lollipops.
One thing to know if you take the train: you need to be back at a certain time to guarantee a seat back to St. Jacobs. Otherwise, you are still guaranteed a ride back, but you might have to stand.
We had just under two hours to explore the festival before heading back, and for us, that was plenty of time.
I would definitely recommend the train for families. It made the whole day feel more organized, less stressful, and honestly more fun. The train ride itself became part of the experience.
This stay also worked really well as a hotel near the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival because we could walk from the hotel to the train station and ride into Elmira instead of driving.

Honest Drawback
The honest drawback is that this is not the most exciting hotel if you are staying on a non-market day. There is no pool, the Wi-Fi was not near the top of my leaderboard, and the room layout still has some older Courtyard design elements.
But for us, that did not really hurt the stay.
The room was clean and comfortable, the beds were good, the staff handled the feather-free request quickly, parking was easy, the gym was clean, and the location made the whole weekend work.
On a market day, especially if you are also planning to ride the Waterloo Central Railway or visit a local event, this hotel is a great base.
