Hotel Review: TownePlace Suites by Marriott Alexandria Fort Belvoir – Army Museum Access, Fast Wi-Fi & Family-Friendly Suites

For our second stop on the Summer 2025 road trip, we checked into the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Alexandria Fort Belvoir for a quick overnight. We picked it mainly for the location—super close to the National Museum of the United States Army—but it also worked well as a comfy base for exploring Mount Vernon, Old Town Alexandria, and even D.C. The verdict? A solid, stress-free stop with fast Wi-Fi, easy console hookup, and the classic TownePlace perks that families love.

First Impressions & Check-In

We rolled in early afternoon from Pittsburgh with a plan: check in fast, hit the museum before closing. Parking out front was wide open. Melinda at the front desk was friendly and efficient, and we caught the lobby at a quiet time—plenty of luggage carts made unloading a breeze. The lobby is on the smaller side compared to other TownePlace properties, but it actually added to the cozy vibe. Area info was easy to find, too.

Room Tour

We booked a Studio, 2 Queen. Clean, bright, and roomy enough for the four of us. Highlights:

  • Full-size fridge + kitchenette → perfect for stocking road-trip drinks and snacks.
  • Table/workspace → my nightly doodle station.
  • Comfy beds and a tub in the bathroom.

A couple quirks: the corner by the lamp felt like it needed an armchair, and the toilet handle pulls up and toward you (took a minute to get used to).

Tech & Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi connected instantly on my phone, iPad, laptop, and Nintendo Switch, and speeds were strong. As of this stay, it sits in my Top 10 on the leaderboard.

The TV was perfectly placed on a dresser with a free outlet right beside it, so hooking up my Switch was plug-and-play. Pro tip for families: bring a power bar—it keeps everyone charged without hunting for outlets.

Pool, Gym & Outdoor Spaces

  • Pool: good size with loungers, chairs, and lots of natural light. The only downside: humidity. It was hot and super muggy during our late-July visit, and there were dehumidifiers running on both sides. Hopefully this gets tuned up because the space itself is nice.
  • Gym: bigger than expected—multiple cardio machines, a full set of free weights, and a cable machine.
  • Back patio: cozy outdoor area with couches, tables, a fire table, and two BBQs—great for chilling or grilling.

Food & Breakfast

Local recommendations from the hotel included Chalkboard Wings & BBQ, El Paso, and Grandma’s Kitchen Café. But since I needed new swim trunks, we went to the Costco up the street and grabbed a classic food-court dinner (chicken bake for me; turkey sandwich + new panzarotti for my dad/sis; hot dog + drink for my mom). Pro tip: their prepared deli sandwiches are clutch for the next leg of a road trip.

Breakfast is included at TownePlace: the space is small but restocked frequently. Standouts were the croissant sandwiches and blueberry waffles. If you like a calm start, go early before it gets busy.

Things to Do Nearby

National Museum of the United States Army (≈ 10 minutes, free admission & parking)
This was the whole reason we stayed here—and it delivered. The museum is split into eras (Founding, Global Wars, Cold War, Changing World, and more) with lifelike cast figures and detailed exhibits. We also caught the Call to Arms: The Soldier and the Revolutionary War special exhibit for the Army’s 250th—very cool artifacts, including some first-time public displays.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon (≈ 5 minutes)
Historic estate, gardens, working farm, and museum—all right on the Potomac. It’s one of those “must-see at least once” places.

Old Town Alexandria & D.C. access
Drive 20–35 minutes to the Alexandria Historic District (traffic depending), or skip parking drama: drive to Huntington Metro (Yellow Line) and ride two stops to Old Town or continue into D.C. (e.g., L’Enfant Plaza) for the Smithsonian museums.

Final Verdict: This Teen Travelz Approved ✅

For an overnight and as a base to explore Alexandria, Mount Vernon, and D.C., this TownePlace Suites checks the boxes:

  • Clean room with a full-size fridge/kitchenette
  • Fast Wi-Fi and easy Nintendo Switch hookup
  • Included breakfast with solid options
  • Grill-and-chill patio and a better-than-expected gym

The pool humidity needs attention, and an extra armchair would make the room layout feel complete, but overall this property is a yes for road-tripping families and teen travelers. This Teen Travelz Approved.
