Hotel Review: TownePlace Suites Chesterfield – Shopper’s Basecamp, Solid Pool Vibes & A+ Location

Two nights, tons of errands, and a whole lot of Hall Road runs. TownePlace Suites by Marriott Chesterfield (Chesterfield, MI) has become one of my family’s go-to bases—especially for cross-border shoppers from Canada. Think full in-room kitchen, bright pool, a legitimately stacked gym for the brand, and everything you need within 5–15 minutes.

Arrival & First Impressions

We pulled in just before 5 p.m.—lots of parking up front and plenty of luggage carts (always a good omen). Inside: bright, open lobby with cozy pockets of seating that double as the breakfast area. Outside: two big BBQs (the front desk will lend tools) and a fire pit with lounge chairs that actually gets used.

Check-in shoutout: Sean at the front desk—friendly, fast, and super helpful.

Studio 2 Queen Upgrade & Room Layout

Booked a Studio King, but since my sister joined, Sean upgraded us to a Studio 2 Queen (corner room, 4th floor = quiet). Entry hallway has a closet plus a real kitchen: full-size fridge, microwave, dishwasher, and stovetop. In the main space:

  • Wall-mounted swivel TV with a two-chair table underneath
  • Reading chair + lamp corner
  • Two comfy queen beds
  • Full-length mirror + wall hooks (clutch for bags)
  • Clean, well-kept bathroom with a tub

Room vibe = bright, well-lit, and way more spacious than you expect at this price point.

Tech & Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi was easy to connect on all my devices (laptop/phone/iPad/Nintendo Switch). Speeds leaned slower, but I could still play Roblox on iPad fine.

Console setup: the swivel mount made HDMI a breeze, and everything worked perfectly.
One wish: more accessible outlets near the TV/desk (designers, please!). My trusty power strip saved the day—pack one.

Pool, Gym & Hang Spaces

  • Pool: in-between small and medium, wall of floor-to-ceiling windows = tons of natural light. Good mix of loungers, tables, and chairs.
  • Fitness center (legit impressive for a TPS):
  • 6 cardio machines • full dumbbell rack • 2 benches • leg presslat pull-down • yoga gear
  • Outdoors: BBQ zone + fire pit = great evening hang after shopping runs.

Food & Local Eats

Right off Hall Road (M-59) = options for days.

My musts:

  • Buddy’s Pizza (Detroit-style legend) – <15 min
  • Ford’s Garage – we hit Happy Hour: cheese curds to start, then Woodward Burger combo (I swapped the beer for a cherry Coke)

Other solid picks nearby (most within 5–15 min):
Culver’s (across the street) • Jersey Mike’s • Portillo’s (Italian beef + chocolate cake shake = do it) • Red Robin (bottomless everything) • Outback SteakhouseJuan Miguel’sOlive Garden (lunch soup/salad/breadsticks FTW)

Dessert + a mini show: Sanders Chocolate & Ice Cream Shoppe (~5 min). Grab a Hot Fudge Cream Puff or Bumpy Cake, then peek through the glass hallway to watch chocolates being made on the production lines. It’s nostalgia + sugar.

Things To Do

  • C.J. Barrymore’s (seasonal hours): karts, loop coaster, water rides, bowling, mini golf—indoor/outdoor amusement park energy.
  • Dave & Buster’s (~15 min) for arcade nights.
  • Multiple movie theatres within ~20 minutes.

Breakfast Notes

Breakfast is included. Options during our stay: muffins, breads, hard-boiled eggs, pancakes, spinach quiche, egg-ham-cheese croissants, oatmeal bar, milk/yogurt/juices, cereals, fruit.
Where it could improve: I’d love separate scrambled eggs + sausage/bacon, and a waffle station would level it up.

Final Verdict

If you’re a road-tripping family or cross-border shopper, this is an ideal base: clean rooms, real kitchens, natural-light pool, better-than-expected gym, BBQs + fire pit, and Hall Road convenience for food and shopping. Wi-Fi isn’t the fastest, but it held up for my casual gaming, and everything else over-delivered for the brand.

Big thanks to Sean at the front desk for the warm welcome and the helpful upgrade—every interaction here has been friendly and on point across our many stays. I also want to give a big shout out and thanks to Masalena the hotel GM—she is so friendly and helpful and has always greeted my family on every stay.
