What I Look For During Each Stay
When I review a Residence Inn by Marriott hotel, I’m not just checking if the room has a kitchen.
I’m looking at how the hotel actually works for families, teens, road trippers, and longer stays.
The biggest things I compare are Wi-Fi speed, whether the TV setup works for gaming, how easy the HDMI access is, whether the kitchen is actually useful, how much space the room gives your family, and whether the breakfast, gym, pool, laundry, lobby, and location make the stay better.
Residence Inn is usually a practical brand, but the details matter a lot.
A strong Residence Inn stay can feel like a small apartment with hotel perks. You get space to relax, a fridge for snacks and leftovers, a table for eating or editing, and separate areas where families can spread out. A weaker Residence Inn stay can feel frustrating if the Wi-Fi is slow, the sofa bed is uncomfortable, the TV setup is tricky, or the hotel feels more dated than expected.
That’s why I test the things that actually matter during a real stay.
Residence Inn by Marriott Hotel Reviews
Residence Inn Whitby – Whitby, Ontario
Best for: practical Whitby stays, sports travel, family stopovers, Highway 401 access
This Residence Inn had some useful basics, including a clean and quiet one-bedroom suite, a practical kitchen setup, free parking, included breakfast, and a convenient location near Highway 401, restaurants, Landmark Cinemas, Playdium, Whitby Putting Edge, iFLY, Reptilia Whitby, and Neb’s Fun World.
The room itself was one of the better parts of the stay. The kitchen looked almost brand new, the layout worked well for a family stay, and the living room TV had an easy gaming setup thanks to the swing-out mount. Wi-Fi was easy to connect to, but speeds were more basic at 30.4 Mbps download and 29.2 Mbps upload.
The bigger issue was the overall hotel experience. The pool did not look ready for guests when I first checked it out, the gym was extremely cramped, the hallways and elevators were not as clean as expected, and the feather-free room request was not handled as well as I’ve seen at other hotels. Breakfast and location were positives, but the full stay did not reach the Residence Inn standard I expected.
For me, this one was Not This Teen Travelz Approved.

Residence Inn London Downtown – London, Ontario
Best for: Ontario road trips, downtown London stays, families, longer stays, Western University visits
This was a full-circle stay for me because my family used to stay at the Residence Inn London Downtown years ago during road trips, summer visits, events, and Michigan stopovers. Coming back as This Teen Travelz made this review feel extra special.
The biggest win here is the suite setup. Our 1 Bedroom Suite felt spacious, bright, and apartment-like, with a separate bedroom, full kitchen, living room, desk, high-top table, sofa bed, and lots of space to spread out. The Wi-Fi was strong at 118 Mbps download and 140 Mbps upload, and the Nintendo Switch setup was easy thanks to the swing-out TV mount in the living room.
There is no pool, so this is not a swimming-focused hotel. But the fitness centre was solid, breakfast was one of the stronger included hotel breakfasts I’ve had, and the downtown London location works really well for Covent Garden Market, Canada Life Place, Tilt Arcade Bar, 100 Kellogg Lane, Western University, and day trips to St. Thomas or Port Stanley.
For me, this was one of the strongest Residence Inn stays I’ve had so far, especially because of the suite layout, strong Wi-Fi, breakfast, and downtown London location.

Residence Inn Grand Rapids Downtown – Grand Rapids, Michigan
Best for: downtown Grand Rapids stays, walkable food, city views, family suites
The Residence Inn Grand Rapids Downtown stood out because of its awesome downtown location, spacious suite, strong breakfast, and walkable access to restaurants, entertainment, and attractions. The hotel has a bright and modern lobby, a nice outdoor patio, and a room setup that felt like a little downtown apartment.
Our Double Queen Suite had a full kitchen, dining nook, living area, sofa bed, desk, swivel TV, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a separate bedroom area with city views. Breakfast was one of the best I had that year, with hot items, waffles, oatmeal, mini quiches, and even cold brew coffee with flavored syrups.
The biggest downside was Wi-Fi. It was tricky to connect, and once it worked, the speeds were not great compared to other hotels I’ve tested. But the location, room layout, breakfast, and overall downtown vibe still made this a strong Residence Inn stay.

Residence Inn Blacksburg-University – Blacksburg, Virginia
Best for: Virginia Tech visits, college road trips, walkable food, strong Wi-Fi
Residence Inn Blacksburg-University was a clean, chill, and practical stopover near Virginia Tech. The hotel has a strong college-town location, a HokieBird statue out front, lots of lobby seating, and one of the best walkable food areas I’ve seen near a hotel.
The room was a Studio King with Sofa Bed, including a full kitchen, dining area, work desk, swivel TV, and a good-sized bathroom. Wi-Fi was strong across my phone, laptop, iPad, and Nintendo Switch, and the gaming setup was easy because the TV was not wall-mounted.
The indoor pool was bigger than I expected for a Residence Inn, and the outdoor patio had seating, a firepit, and a barbecue grill. Breakfast was also a win, especially the warm croissant sandwich and iced coffee.
The only major warning was the sofa bed. It was not comfortable, so if your family needs extra sleeping space, I’d recommend booking a 2-queen room or a 1-bedroom suite instead.

Residence Inn Mont Tremblant Manoir Labelle – Mont Tremblant, Quebec
Best for: mountain getaways, family suites, pedestrian village stays, longer vacations
Residence Inn Mont Tremblant Manoir Labelle is one of my favorite family getaway hotels because it sits right inside the Mont Tremblant pedestrian village. That means you’re steps from restaurants, shops, dessert spots, activities, gondolas, and mountain views.
My family usually books the 2-bedroom bi-level suite, and it feels more like a mountain condo than a regular hotel room. There’s an upstairs bedroom, another bedroom area, a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, multiple TVs, and sometimes a balcony overlooking the village walkway.
The Wi-Fi was more mid than amazing, but it worked for casual streaming and gaming. The bedroom TV setup worked better than the living room setup, so I’d recommend bringing a power strip.
The outdoor pool and hot tub fit the mountain village vibe really well, and the free breakfast is a big bonus for families. Add in the luge, gondolas, restaurants, Beavertails, Chocolato, Tonga Lumina, and all the Tremblant activities nearby, and this is easily one of the most fun Residence Inn stays I’ve reviewed.

Residence Inn by Marriott can be one of the most practical Marriott brands for teen travelers and families.
The best Residence Inn stays give you more space, real kitchens, free breakfast, strong Wi-Fi, and room layouts that actually make family travel easier. They can work really well for road trips, longer stays, college visits, mountain getaways, downtown events, and family weekends.
But the brand is not automatic.
Some Residence Inns have stronger Wi-Fi, better breakfast, easier gaming setups, and more useful locations than others. Sofa beds can also be hit or miss, and not every property has a pool.
